Abstract

Objective To study the safety and effectiveness of nitrous oxide (≤70%) for colonoscopy. Methods A total of 630 patients who underwent colonoscopy from April 2011 to December 2011 were divided into group A (nitrous oxide-colonoscopy group, n =330) and group B (conventional colonoscopy group, n =300). Their heart rate (HR), oxygen saturation and sedative effects were compared. Results The perioperative reaction in group A was obviously lower than in group B. In group A, the perioperative HR was obviously lower than the preoperative HR [(74.90±13.65) vs (79.16±14.67), P <0.05] and the perioperative SpO2 was significantly higher than the preoperative SpO2 [(99.64±1.04)% vs (99.14± 1.35)%, P <0.05]. In group B, the perioperative HR was significantly higher than the preoperative HR (89.80±13.52) vs (79.77±13.35), P <0.05] and the perioperative SpO2 was slightly higher than the preoperative SpO2 [(99.64±1.04)% vs (99.14±1.35)%, P <0.05],but the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusions Nitrous oxide for colonoscopy is comfortable, safe and feasible.
