Investigation of living habits, sleep condition and body mass index among navy pilots

Abstract

Objective To investigates the current lifestyle of navy pilots, offering scientific basis for promoting the health condition of pilots and ensuring the safety of flight. Methods A questionnaire investigation on life habits was carried out in 557 pilots; their body weight, body height and body mass index (BMI) were measured, then those data were analyzed using SPSS11 soft ware. Results (1)There was a high proportion of smoking in pilots of all ages(52.68%-55.24%). No significant difference was found in all kinds of airplane groups. (2)The proportion of pilot with habit of drinking usually was 8.7% in 20-29 year old group, 26.79% in 30-39 year old group, and 25.17% in 40+ year old group. (3)There was a high proportion of doing physical exercise in pilots of all ages, which was 98.05% in 20-29 year old group, 91.87% in 30-39 year old group, and 85.31% in 40+ year old group. 76.87% of pilots often did physical exercise in transporter group, lower than that in other three groups (P<0.01). (4)Survey Results on sleeping showed that no significant difference in different age group and different airplane group. (5)There was a high proportion of overweight and obesity in pilots of all ages, which increased with age. Conclusions There is high proportion of pilots with unhygienic dietary and living habits, which are very important factors for causing overweight and obesity, and it is imperative to interfere with it.
