Abstract

Objective To investigate the correlation between caveolin-1 expression and clinicopathological factors and prognosis in patients with human breast carcinoma. Methods Using immunnohistochemistry to analyze the caveolin-1 expression in 168 patients with human breast carcinoma and adjacent normal breast tissue. The relationship of caveolin-1 expression and clinicopathological factors were analyzed using statistical software Prism 5.0. Results The expression of caveolin-1 in breast carcinoma was significantly lower than that in adjacent normal tissues (P<0.01).The caveolin-1 expression was significantly correlated with advancing clinical stage(P=0.044),presence of maxillary lymph node matastasis(P=0.039),and the increase of HER-2 positive(P=0.014). The difference between groups was statistically significant (P<0.01).The patients with breast carcinoma and positive expression of caveolin-1 had a higher five-year survival rate(P=0.018). The expression of caveolin-1 was not correlated with tumor size, age of the patients and histological grade. Conclusions The expression of caveolin-1 may be involved in the occurrence and development process of breast carcinoma. The expression of caveolin-1 has a certain relationship with clinicopathological factors in breast carcinoma. It may play a role of tumor inhibiting factor in breast carcinoma progression.
