Objective To study the causes of false positive results in the fourth generation p24 Ag/anti-HIV combined assay and cut down the false positive results. Methods We picked 119 samples which were reactive in HIV-Ab screening test with the fourth generation HIV assay, then confirmed these samples with West-blot assay and compared them. Results In 119 reactive samples, 40 samples were HIV-1 positive, 28 samples were HIV-Ab indeterminate, and 51 samples were HIV-Ab negative. The higher the S/CO index, the closer the positive results of screening test related to one of confirmatory test. Conclusions The rate of false positive is high with the fourth generation HIV assay, which is relative to the combined detection of anti-HIV-P24. When 1<S/CO≤10, we should consider comprehensive factors such as history of disease, the clinical symptoms, etc.
