Effect of dietary fibers on patient with functional constipation

Abstract

Objective To study the effect of combined different dietary fibers on patients with functional constipation. Methods Thirty patients with functional constipation were recruited and given oral administration of combined of different dietary fibers for 15 d. The symptoms of constipation and fecal condition were observed and quantified using scores. Quality of Life (PAC-QOL) scale was used to assess the quality of life in patients with functional constipation before and after treatment. Results After 8 d oral administration of dietary fiber, constipation, fecal condition, poor defecation and defecation frequency were significantly different. After 15 d oral administration, the excellence rate was 90% and the effective rate was 96.67%. But after follow-up for 1 month, the effective rate decreased to 16.67%. Conclusions The combination of different dietary fibers is an effective therapy for functional constipation.
