Abstract

Objective Chemerin is a newly discovered adipokine. This aim of the study was to determine the association of serum chemerin levels with the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus accompanied by coronary artery disease. Methods This study consisted of 256 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: 156 without coronary artery disease and 100 with coronary artery disease. Serum chemerin levels were investigated in the two groups by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the correlation between type 2 diabetes mellitus and the coronary artery disease. Results Type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with combined coronary artery disease showed significantly elevated serum chemerin levels compared with those without coronary artery disease. Serum chemerin level was a determinant parameter of the presence of coronary artery disease in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. Conclusions Serum chemerin level can serve as a predictive serum marker for the development of coronary artery disease in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.
