Abstract

Objective To investigate the incidence of difficult airway during general anesthesia in patients under going thyroid cancer surgery. Method A retrospective study was carried out for 146 cases of thyroid cancer surgery from January 2014 to December 2014 , glidescope was used for intubation when preoperative evaluation difficult airway score was 5 or above, while general laryngoscope was used when difficult airway score was below 5. Blood pressure and heart rate were recorded at the time points of before induction, endotracheal intubation, 5min after intubation, beginning of surgery. The probability of the occurrence of the difficult airway was counted, and relevant factors which may lead to difficult airway were analyzed. Result 7 cases of difficult airway develoved in 29 males and 8 cases of difficult airway in 117 females, body mass index was 26.8±3.7 for male cases and 24.0±3.9 for female cases.Conclusion The overall incidence of difficult airway is 10.2% for thyroid cancer. The incidence is higher for males than for females, which may be related to the higher male body mess index.
