Abstract

Objective To compare the biological effects of polymethyl mechacrylate(PMMA)and calcium phosphate cement(CPC)as percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) fillers in treating osteoporotic vertebral compressive fractures by 3D finite element analysis.Methods (1)The casting mechanicaI characters of PMMA and CPC were measured.(2) the 3D finite element models were developed by using finite element software and others.(3) PKP was simulated to evaluate the influence of L₁.Results (1) A 3D finite element model of human osteoporotic thoracolumber spine was developed.(2) Injection of PMMA or CPC all could stabilize vertebrae and restore the strength and stifness of vertebral body and lead to less increase the stress concentration at its posterior body and adjacent vertebral body.Conclusion The new artificial bone (GENEX) in the future can be used as an ideal filling material for the treatment of thoracolumbar vertebral compression fracture in young adults.
