Abstract

Objective To investigate the relationships between anterior cruciate ligament(ACL) diameter measured by high frequency ultrasound and ACL injuries. Methods Thirty young male soldiers with unilateral non-contact ACL injuries were divided into the injury group, while another thirty healthy young male soldiers were assigned to the control group. The thickness of ACL near the tibial insertion site was measured by high frequency ultrasound. Healthy ACL was examined in the injury group. Both types of ACL were examined in the control group. The left and right ACL thickness near the tibial insertion site was compared and analyzed in the control group. The thickness of healthy ACL in the injury group and both types of ACL in the control group were compared and analyzed. Results There was no statistically significant difference between the left and right ACL thickness near the tibial insertion site in the control group (8.11±0.64) mm versus (8.03±0.61)mm, P>0.05. There was also no significant difference between the two groups in height, weight or age (P>0.05). The thickness of healthy ACL near the tibial insertion site in the injury group was significantly smaller than in the control group (6.25±0.37) mm versus (8.07±0.61)mm, P<0.05.Conclusions The smaller the thickness of ACL, the higher the risk of ACL injury. The thickness of ACL measured by high frequency ultrasound can be used as an indicator for assessment of ACL injury risk.
