Abstract

Objective To study the relationships between carotid atherosclerosis and levels of serum adiponectin and resistin in elderly patients with hypertension. Methods Correlation analysis was performed on 112 elderly patients with hypertension treated in our hospital between January 2016 and December 2017. All the patients underwent carotid artery ultrasound. According to the ultrasound results, these patients were divided into the normal group (32 cases), thickness group (42 cases) and atherosclerotic plaque group (38 cases). Serum adiponectin and resistin levels in each group were measured and compared. Results Serum adiponectin levels were negatively correlated with intima-media thickness(r=-0.562), while serum resistin levels were positively correlated(r=0.621). Insulin resistance and serum resistin levels were independent risk factors for carotid atherosclerosis, while serum adiponectin levels were protective factors for atherosclerosis. Conclusions Elderly patients with hypertension who have low serum adiponectin and high resistin levels are at higher risk of carotid atherosclerosis. For elderly patients with hypertension, monitoring serum adiponectin and resistin levels can help control carotid atherosclerosis.
