Abstract

Objective To explore the relationship between loneliness, self-compassion and post-stress growth among young Armed Police soldiers from the perspective of existential psychotherapy. Methods A post-stress growth questionnaire, the self-compassion scale, and the UCLA loneliness scale were used to survey 690 Armed Police soldiers. Results (1) Loneliness was negatively correlated with self-compassion and post-stress growth, while self-compassion had significantly positive correlations with post-stress growth (r=-0.63, r=-0.39, r=0.39, P<0.01). (2) Loneliness could negatively predict post-stress growth (β=-0.247, P<0.001), and the mindfulness dimension of self-compassion could positively predict post-stress growth (β=0.302, P<0.001). (3) Loneliness indirectly affected post-stress growth via the mediation of self-compassion (t=-5.520, P<0.001, t=5.035, P<0.001).Conclusions Loneliness can negatively predict post-stress growth. The mindfulness dimension of self-compassion can positively predict post-stress growth. Self-compassion plays a mediating role between loneliness and post-stress growth.
