Clinical applications of phloroglucinol in the removal of ureteral stents under transurethral cystoscopy

Abstract

Objective To investigate the applicability of phloroglucinol in transurethral cystoscopic removal of ureteral stents.Methods A random sample of 300 postoperative patients with upper urinary calculi treated in our hospital between June 2018 and October 2020 was collected. All these subjects were male, who had had their ureteral stents removed under transurethral cystoscopy in our hospital. They were randomly divided into the conventional group (n=100) and the observation group (n=200). Both groups received conventional lidocaine mucilage urethral mucosal surface anesthesia, but the observation group was also intravenously injected with phloroglucinol 80 mg 15 minutes preoperatively. The pain score, urethral mucosal injury, hematuria and adverse reactions were observed.Results There was no adverse drug reaction in the observation group. The level of intraoperative pain of the observation group was significantly lower than that of the conventional group. The incidence of mild pain was 88.9% in the observation group, but 54.6% in the conventional group, so the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P=0.036). Hematuria was significantly less frequent in the observation group than in the conventional group, and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P=0.003). There was no significant difference between the two groups in age, locations of ureteral stents, or indwelling time.Conclusions Phloroglucinol combined with lidocaine mucilage during transurethral cystoscopic ureteral stent removal can significantly alleviate patients' pain and urethral injury without any adverse reactions, so this approach should be made more accessible.
