Abstract

Objective To explore the clinical efficacy of two different injection methods of botulinum toxin A in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on 28 male patients with androgenetic alopecia who received botulinum toxin A treatment at the department of dermatology of Hainan Hospital of PLA General Hospital from April 2023 to April 2024. A total of 28 patients were included in this study, and they were divided into groups based on different treatment methods, with 15 patients receiving intramuscular injection (intramuscular injection group), and 13 patients receiving intramuscular injection combined with intradermal injection (combined injection group). Clinical efficacy was assessed after 24 weeks of treatment using three evaluation methods: self-assessment, appearance evaluation, and hair count assessment. Results There was no statistically significant difference in self-assessment, the improvement of scalp oiliness and hair growth between the two groups(P > 0.05). The effective rate of intramuscular injection group was 60%, and that of the combined group was 69.2%,with no statistically significant difference (P > 0.05) . In hair count assessment, both groups showed a significant increase in hair count after treatment compared to before treatment (P < 0.05). At week 24 of treatment, the combined injection group showed superior results compared to the intramuscular injection group[(176.2±44.9)vs.(160.5±31.3)], with statistically significant difference (P < 0.05). Conclusions Both intramuscular injection and combined intramuscular and intradermal injection of botulinum toxin A are effective in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia, and the combined injection method is more effective.
