Meta analysis of effects of exercise method and time on fatigue in maintenance hemodialysis patients

Abstract

Objective To systematically evaluate the effect of exercise method and time on alleviating fatigue in patients with maintenance hemodialysis（MHD）. Methods Computerized searches were conducted in medical literature databases from their establishment until January 2022 to identify clinical studies on exercise training intervention for MHD patients’ fatigue. Relevant data were extracted and the quality was assessed, and then analyzed using RevMan5.4 software. Results A total of 12 studies were included, involving 1064 patients. Exercise significantly improved the fatigue of MHD patients(MD=-2. 60, 95%CI:-2. 83 to 2.38, P < 0.00001). In terms of exercise parameters, the intervention frequency was 3 to 5 times per week in all the included studies. Aerobic combined with resistance exercise, exercise time ≥12 weeks and each session lasting 30 to 40 minutes achieved better therapeutic effects in alleviating the fatigue of MHD patients. Conclusions Exercise is beneficial for helping MHD patients alleviate fatigue.
