Abstract

Objective To observe the clinical effect of umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells transplantation on drooling of cerebral palsy patients. Methods Twenty-five cases of cerebral palsy children with drooling were randomly assigned into the experimental group and control group. Each child in the experimental group accepted four times of stem cells transplantation via lumbar puncture, while patients in the control group were given neither surgery nor drug intervention. The frequency and severity (FS) of drooling, saliva weight (W),and drooling quotient (DQ)in both groups were assessed one, three and six months before and after transplantation respectively. Results SF and DQ of the experimental group one, three and six months after transplantation were significantly lower than in the control group (P<0.05), and the difference was statistically significant. SF indicated that one, three and six months after transplantation the cure rate was 61.54%, 23.08% and 23.08% respectively. DQ suggested that the cure rate was 69.23%, 46.15% and 23.08% respectively. SF and DQ showed that the efficacy rate one, three and six months after transplantation was 69.23%. One and three months postoperatively, the value of W was significantly lower than that of the control group (P<0.05). One and three months after transplantation, the cure rates were 69.23% and 38.46% respectively in the experimental group.Six months after transplantation, there was no statistically significant difference between the experimental group and control group. However, the cure rate of the experimental group six months postoperatively was 23.08%, and the efficacy rate was 69.23%.Conclusions The umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells transplantation can significantly improve the drooling in children with cerebral palsy, thus improving the life quality of patients.
